Ladies, what is cheaper and more efficient...buying tan yourself, and applying it yourself, OR paying $75 to get a Jan Tana airbrush spray at the show?

Keep in mind:

- I have absolutely no idea how to go about the tanning process
- I have a very tight budget
- I don't know how much tan costs
- I don't know which tan to get!

You can order the Jana tan for about 25-30 bucks and paint it on yourself. Usually 24-48 hours in advance. They have a new 10 min. tan formula that I may try this time. Not sure I'd want someone else tanning me...A little too up close and personal for me...

It depends on what you're more comfortable with. I have always tanned myself but I think its a pain in the ass, so this time I am getting sprayed...I think its worth it to have one less thing to worry about, not to mention they'll take care of touch-ups etc.

When I did it myself, I needed 4 coats...I've never used the 10min 1 coat stuff, I would be worried of it not being dark enough.

For a $$ budget: doing it yourself.
I bough pro tan and had a friend apply it for me starting 3 days out from my show. I had great colour. BUT, it is best applied when someone ( friend or family member) paints it on for you. I have no problem touching you up ( and by that I mean your tan..totally not in a pervy way ) but you will need to be in London the night before...we can do it in Tammy's room as I will have Nate with me.
It takes about an hour to put on one coat over the whole body and about 40 minutes until you can put clothes on. If you are using Pro tan, it takes quite a few coats to get that dark barbie look. I have no experience with jana tan. I've heard people using the jana- pro tan combo and loving it tho.

If you want to save yourself 3 days and trust me a lot of hassel - do the spray on the day of the show. I hear they go on flawless.
But if you choose the self application Kari and I are hear for ya girlie...

Well, I don't care about someone tanning me, lol. I just want the easiest, most stress-free thing.

I don't know whether to go with protan or jan tana, to be honest. Aly, I'll be in London on the 4th, because I have to do weigh-ins, drug testing, etc. Would we start on the night of the 4th?

If I have you girls (Kari, Tammy, Aly) helping me, that would be TREMENDOUS.

I found the following for tan, can you girls help me decide which is the better one, and how much I'll be needing?:

Bodybuilding.com - Jan Tana Competition TAN - Perfect Contest Color! On sale now!

Bodybuilding.com - Pro Tan Overnight Competition Color - Since 1987! On sale now!

Bodybuilding.com - Jan Tana Show TAN - Lasts 4-5 Days! On sale now!

If you're looking at those, I would go with the first one...I use the kit that comes with the color and the skin prep stuff, so I havent used any of those 3 products.

Those are really good deals for products. I found the protan was really forgiving even if you didn't know what you are doing. Any streaks go away as it dries and after about 5 coats it is super dark. I found it dried really quickly Aly and didn' walk around naked for an hour lol! You just have to wear black clothes for the rest of the week!
I will have tons of dream tan and will have it backstage if you want to try a coat of that too before going on stage.
BTW I bought Maybeliene mousse makeup in caramel. It matches the protan and dream tan combo perfectly.

^^ hmmm? I had to walk around all nakey for a while...but that could have been my paranoia of ruining my tan.
But I still wouldn't put on clothes right away...but yes they have to be black or a dark colour.

I will be in London on the 4th as well! so if you need help just shout. I'll PM you my cell phone number closer to the date!

Well, that whole package is pretty expensive...if I was getting it I might as well get the spray tan, since canadian shipping is a bit pricy

What did you have to do beforehand? Just exfoliate?

Have you used any of those protan products I listed, Tammy?

I'm not a big fan of dream tan...I hear the judges hate it, and it's super messy! (rubs off and shtuff)

I'll look into the maybeliene makeup! Thanks!

HAHA. Well we'll figure something out!

If we're there the same night that's great, though would 1 night be enough time to tan?

I tanned for three days. But that was with pro tan.
day one - one coat
day two - two coats
day three - one coat
show date - just touch ups.

If you can avoid this tanning schedule...DO! It was a PAIN IN THE ASS. and I smelled by the time my show was over..you can't shower until after your show!!
Honestly, I would pay the $75 if you can round it up.

YEP! They take care of the rest. I did 1st spray day before then before pre-judging they do touch-ups as well as apply glaze and help w/bikini bite. They also did that for final show.

Here was my tanning routine last show with the protan competition colour

Wednesday night, 1 coat of protan
Thursday morning, shower, night 1 coat of protan
Friday morning shower, 1 coat of protan, night 1 coat of protan
Since you do not want to use dream tan I would put on another coat of protan Saturday morning. 1 bottle would do it and you should be able to find it in a supplement shop locally for around 30$. For shine you can use Pam. If not this one in Ottawa ships Tanning Products - Fit Shop

Also here is the top 3 at my last show. All of us had dream tan on Figure Short Ont. - Dave Paul's Photos- powered by SmugMug

As you can see I did not stop showering until Friday so was not too stinky

Do you still have the picture I sent you of me in my green suit? I was about half an hour before going onstage and all dream tanned up. I didn't find it messy at all and got good compliments from the OPA judges about colour. One even said I could have been darker!

Well, I think I'm just going to go ahead and get spray tanned instead...it'll probably save me a LOT of hassle!! I'd rather pay an extra $30 and have it done perfect then have to rush things and have a big mess..

Tammy..how did your protan not come off in the shower?? Did you ise a different kind than me? Because the night of the show mine washed off immediately. Plus Amanda threatened me with in an inch of my life not to get it wet ( she was the kind friend who took the time to paint me) I wasn't allowed to exert myself for fear of sweat...lol
Maybe she was just a little overly paranoid as well...??

Sneeze...spray tan..BEST OPTION. I saw girls with the spray tan and their colour was great.

I have gotten spray tanned for all 3 shows and highly recommend it.

Ask who ever is spraying you if they will be around in the morning for touch ups if you need it. Sleep in long sleeves and pants to prevent blotches from forming.

Yup, they do touch-ups and everything the following morning.
