My trainer would like me to try dandelion root as a diuretic this time. I have never used it before. Does anyone have experience with it? How long before show day should you start it? What dose did you use?

Hello, love! I actually drink the tea quite often. As far as a pill for a diuretic... It depends on how much water you are holding. Typically you take 500mg to 2g the day before and the morning of the show.

Vitamin C also helps expel water. If you take up to 10 g a day all week, it will help you before the show.

Yes I just found out about the vit C. That was a new revelation to me!

At the advice of a local pro I am also going to supplement with B6 and potassium with the dandelion root and vit C. I will be very curious to see if this regime helps me tighten up a little more this time.

I wouldnt do the potassium--- wayyyy more harm than benefit to start messing with your potassium levels.

Taken from a Scott Abel Blog:

This whole misunderstanding of electrolyte function has led to ridiculous myths and misapplications of proper nutrition in the athletic and bodybuilding communities. One of the most bizarre, which comes to mind is the practice of bodybuilders to supplement potassium just before a show.

Why is this bad?

Two reasons: One is that it is impossible to load potassium inside a cell - cell equilibrium is always maintained in exact ratios. If a certain amount of potassium enters a cell, therefore, that identical amount must leave.

This creates the second problem of potassium supplementation. Aldosterone secretion is also triggered by excessive potassium in the blood. This leads to every single negative metabolic situation already mentioned being created, via a different route, that being too much potassium in the blood.

Ditto!!

The whole potassium loading and cutting water thing is straight-up bullsh*t IMO, and does a lot more damage to your body than you may realize. And I'd be careful with those diuretics!

It truly only takes 12 hours of 'cutting water' too in order to dehydrate yourself pre comp...
on a side note. So cutting water 24-36 hrs ahead of time is totally unnecessary and harmful

But I have used dandelion - I do think it is a great herbal diuretic

I'm with KKKRRR and Sneezing! There is no need to mess with potassium OR do crazy water cuts...its dangerous and will do more harm than good!

I just bought a natural herb diuretic from SciVation. Its called "Showtime". It contains a small amount of potassium (99mg), vitamin B6 (100mg), Dandelion leaf (1500mg), and Uva Ursi leaf (1250mg)..

Uva ursi and Dandelion leaf are the two top herbs for gettin rid of the water....hope it helps (I bought mine from BB.com)
