There are many types of eating disorders, and I thought it'd be helpful to have somewhat of a list of them here in this forum. If you've dealt with any of the following, or can think of additional ones to add, please reply to this post.
Anorexia Nervosa
Usually determined by low body weight and body image distortion. Obsessive fear of weight gain characterized by extreme self deprivation. It's a mental disorder whose consequences are sometimes life-threatening.
Those with this disorder have a low self-esteem and a need to control their surroundings. The disorder may originate as a reaction to stress, anxiety, unhappiness, and feeling like life is out of control.
Bulimia Nervosa
People suffering with bulimia eat a lot of food in a short period of time and then compensate through self-induced vomiting, meant to "undo" the effects of binge eating.
Binge Eating
Characterized by periods of impulsive, excessive, or continuous eating beyond feeling full. At times, there may be fasts or diets, and almost always feelings of shame and self-hatred after a binge.
People who overeat are also known as "emotional eaters" and often struggle with various emotions, including anxiety, depression, and loneliness.
Night Eating
Characterized by a complete lack of appetite earlier in the day, and severe overeating at night. Night eaters generally have a very tough time sleeping and wake up feeling extreme guilt over the previous night's binge.
Other Eating Disorders
Some types of disorders may include a combination of any of the above. If you can think of some I've missed, remember to add them below.
Note: ALL eating disorders should be treated by a professional, so if you believe you have any of the above, or an overly obsessive relationship with food, please seek professional help.
