James Ray
James Ray is a spiritual teacher and entrepreneur, who’s big breakthrough in popularity came with the release of the hit movie The Secret, in which he was one of the major content contributors. James boasts a record of being one of the few spiritual teachers with a high level of success in the business world, and he credits much of his knowledge to a lifelong pursuit of travel and understanding the spiritualities of different cultures. Harmonic Wealth: The Secret of Attracting the Life You Want
, is available in paper and audio format, is 336 pages long and was released in April 2008.

Since the principles of The Secret, have become far from a secret as of the release of the book and the movie (and the preceding books on the law of attraction), I am always looking for new content when I pick up a book which is generally founded on the same principles. If you are looking for the ‘Secret’ to attracting anything you want in life, I’d say that you probably need to stop living a life of wishful daydreaming and come to the realization that there is no such secret. If on the other hand, you are looking for a model which your life goals can be framed around, and some tools/strategies to support you in creating those goals with time and effort, then you may get a lot of good out of this book.
Throughout Harmonic Wealth, James provides numerous anecdotes from his own personal experience which give the messages he’s speaking about some flavor. As a self described skinny geek turned body builder, a world traveler, a successful and unsuccessful business man, and seemingly now at the pinnacle of his career, James provides a framework for life harmony which revolves around 5 key pillars of success. He states that these pillars are Physical Health, Mental Health, Financial Health, Relationships, and Spirituality. What I greatly appreciate about what he calls ‘pillars’ is the close resemblance to the key components of whole person wellness which I’ve personally written extensively on in previous blog posts. These are:
- Health (Physical, Psychological/Emotional, Spiritual)
- Career
- Relationships
- Personal Growth & Development
- Finance
- Enjoyment
Certainly there are minor differences in his categorizations but look closer and you’ll find that we essentially provide the same framework. I call it Whole Person Wellness, he calls is Harmonic Wealth. It is one and the same and you’ll find a similar message framed around these components shared by all other great spiritual teachers.
James obviously goes into great detail about the 5 pillars of harmonic wealth, drawing from his life experience as the foundation of the book. The book provides his story, and a series of challenges and exercises for the reader to begin creating their own plan towards a better life. One insight that I truly appreciated was James’ differentiation of ‘balance’ and ‘harmony’. I’ve been a huge proponent of life balance for many years. In my personal life I’ve been extremely focused on maintaining balance between the six components of whole person wellness. And generally I’ve done a great job – particularly since my cancer diagnosis in 2003.
James challenges my notion of balance and says there is no such thing. If life were completely balanced, its unlikely that we’d be excelling in any of the five pillars that he speaks of. James provokes us to think in terms of harmony. When you think of a symphony with great harmony, certain parts of the orchestra take a back seat while others flow in. This dance makes for a beautiful piece. The song is not balanced all the time, but together in its mastery it creates something wonderful.
Given this analogy, I certainly see that there have been ebbs and flows in the six components of wellness throughout my life. When I began my journey as a life coach, wellness coach, and personal growth student, I actually have been pretty balanced. This book is challenging me to become imbalanced for the short term – in a harmonic model such that I may attain some of the goals that have been tough for me to achieve since turning this passion into a career. Rignt now, as I am resting from my exercise routine for the first time in 5.5 years due to a severely sprained ankle that I suffered from 2 weeks ago – I am thinking that not working out 5-6x/week for 1-2 months may fit in the overall picture of harmonic living. This is a mentality that is keeping me from becoming upset that my physical routine is no longer ‘in balance’ – something I’ve personally been obsessed with in the past.
Who is this book for?
Have you become ‘comfortable’ with your current life, but feel that your progress has been stunted? Are you ready to be challenged? Have you been struggling to find harmony in life? Are you a fan of The Secret and want to know everything about it? This book is a fairly comprehensive guide which will provoke you, perhaps give you an aha moment or 2, and may even piss you off if you don’t approach it with an open mind. That being said, I don’t think too many closed minded people get books like this, but if you get offended easily and can’t tolerate different viewpoints on religion/spirituality, then you might want to steer clear (and if you fit in this category consider how those perceptions limit you in life).
