My own rant: I'm working on an MBA with a concentration in accounting. According to my adviser, it's the hardest program offered at my university. I'm also living at home until May, to save money. I work-part time, though my hours are flexible and I usually work from home. Right now I'm taking 6 hours, which is considered full time for a grad student. In the spring I'm going up to 9 hours.

My parents want to sell their home, and I was informed that since I don't really do anything, I can spend the spring getting it ready to sell. I have no problem with helping out...

BUT I DON'T REALLY DO ANYTHING? What the f***!!!???
That's ridiculous.

Great work on the MBA--I'm applying now for Sept 2010 admission. MBAs are thankless degrees, and I know many people who end up working 12+ hour days 7 days/week when courses and extra-curricular activities are included. The fact that you're holding down work while studying is impressive.

Maybe you can propose a work schedule to your parents, where you block off your available time? They can't really argue with that, since you'd be expressing willingness to contribute.

Good luck!

I am so annoyed with the lack of responsibility taken by my students and their parents...My mom/dad never would have called a teacher and begged for a project to be accepted or a test be retaken. I learned how to fail and recover all on my own...My students these days have no idea how to problem or fail...Failing is not a bad thing! This generation needs to learn that there are consequences in life and that sometimes they just need to "fall on their swords" so to speak....GRRR.....

Non education related...I can't believe how much a flight back to RI is going to cost me for the Holidays...I need to go because grandpa only has a few Holidays left in him, and I want to see him...but 450 dollars from Ft.Lauderdale to Providence RI...That's ridiculous!

I feel so bad for you...I dont know how you deal with kids/parents these days. I'm not old, but when I was growing up...I was held responsible for all homework, tests, projects ect...And if I got a bad grade there were consequences. Mommy and Daddys do way too much to make things 'easier' in their kids...how will they ever learn about hard work, responsibility...the pride of self accomplishments??? Ok...I'm done, end rant :/

Beauty- I totally know what you mean about airlines. We fly my stepson here every holiday and it costs us $450 each time. That is about half our Christmas budget for three kids. Ugh!

I can save 150 bucks if I fly on Christmas day at 6 am...Not sure what I am going to do yet...

You'd think with such few people traveling they'd lower the prices, but I guess they want to get their monies worth out of who is traveling...

Girl, don't get me started on the classroom.

Speaking of... Just today I was at the indoor playground with my son. A group of boys were playing tag, all between the age of three and five. One boy accidently knocked down another and the one who fell just lay on the ground crying. His mother ran over, swooped up her 3.5 year old like an injured sea turtle, coddling him in her arms. She scolded the other child (who was not her child), saying, "We don't push. No pushing!"

Then she ran off with her kid, holding him like an infant. She finally let him back on the playground. She stood there gawking at the other kid's parents, going back and forth between the child and the parent as if she was placing a hex on them both.

What ever happen to "get your butt up and brush it off." That is what I tell my kids. Geesh. She acted like the other kid pushed her son in a well and covered him with a ton of sand.

Maybe I am just plain mean. I would never yell at another parent's child. Especially if they are sitting right there.

I would get this crap all the time. I would also get notes from parents excusing children from assignments. My favorite was two days after a child's assignment was due, his mother wrote a note explaining he couldn't complete it because he was too upset about her aunt dying in Puerto Rico. The student had never even met the woman.

I also had a student whose mother would get a pass to enter the school in the morning. She would then wait outside my room in the morning and hound me about assignments. Especially if it was a group assignment. So and so isn't doing his share. My son is doing all the work. My son doesn't get along with so and so. Or she would write me notes telling me her son didn't understand an assignment but was too afraid to say anything. And is dad was an administrator of a high school!

Ah, to think... they were 13 and 14!

Oh man do I empathize! During college to make some extra money I worked at a Marshalls store, and was often stuck in the fitting room. People would bring clothes in to try on, and then, because they themselves stunk, would stink up the brand new clothing so bad sometimes we had to mark it out of inventory. Gross!
