So many women I know seem to be losing hair these days; I was wondering if any of you have experiences in this department, or if you know of something that may help.
Has anyone tried Nioxin?
I personally used to lose quite a bit of hair (and still do, every time I stress a lot)... but I still can't figure out if Nioxin worked for me or not.
I've always lost a lot of hair (I have - HAD - thick, curly, long hair), but a few years ago I started noticing a bit of recession at my temples and freaked out and had the doc run some bloodwork...I have somewhat elevated DHEA-S, and some women have hair follicles that are more sensitive to androgens than others...so even a teeny bit over normal can cause issues. I guess I just used to replace all of the hair I was losing, but now it's just not regrowing as much. 50-100 hairs lost/day is normal.
I used Nizoral shampoo for awhile (gets rid of DHT on the scalp), but it just destroyed my hair.
I started using Nioxin in October and really like it (it also removes DHT, and unplugs follicles). The system seems to be keeping hair loss from getting any worse - I lose much less and my hairline seems to be staying the same. I also started using Eufora's products because they're aloe-based instead of water-based, have lots of great botanical ingredients, and really seem to be keeping my hair healthy-ish. My hair is still long, curly, slightly less thick, but I'm dealing.
But yeah - having hormonal panels can really shine a light on hair loss. Some ladies are, like I said, sensitive to even the slightest elevation above normal. Going on or off hormonal birth control can also affect hair growth/loss. Menstrual cycle fluctuations also contribute to different amounts of hair being lost at different times of the month.
This has become, sadly, an area of amateur expertise for me.

Here I go again with my tree huggin' hippie granola crap. I use essential oils. Rosemary with a few drops of lavender, mixed at about 50% with olive oil and rubbed into the scalp will give you gorgeous radiant hair, help prevent hair loss, quell dandruff, tone the scalp, and encourage growth. I made a mixture for my Dad who has male pattern balding, and it stopped the hair loss. I think if he had kept up with it that he would have seen new growth, but he gave up on it. An infusion of rosemary (rosemary tea) is also a fantastic final rinse for darker hair and has similar, but milder effects of the oil. Nettle infusion is good for preventing hair loss as well, but patch test if you have sensitive skin.

Hmmm really intriguing! I've heard that rosemary blocks DHT on the scalp because it's anti-androgenic...DHT of course is what contributes to hairloss (I know even my Nioxin products contain a bit of rosemary in addition to a bajillion vitamins)...the Eufora is mostly aloe and essential oils, and also has some rosemary.
I've been using the foam that the Nioxin set comes with during the day, but I would like something to put on my scalp at night...that rosemary/lavender/olive oil mixture sounds great! Do you have any recommendations for places to order the essential oils? Any particular olive oil? Extra-virgin, organic? Thanks so much for posting.

Mountain Rose Herbs | Bulk organic herbs, spices & essential oils is my go to place for essential oils. I use organic extra-virgin olive oil in my mixture. Regular would work, but it seems pointless to me to put organic, therapeutic grade oils into a non-organic carrier.
That's interesting info on rosemary and DHT. I had no idea.

Hair loss or hair breakage, this a occur from using a chemical shampoo, imbalance in diet, level of hormone, stress, pregnancy this a factor affecting a hair loss, you do massage with oil and take a healthy food that contain a more vitamin this a best for a hair and not use a hair colour use a henna this way you stop hair loss, good food full of biotin definitely help to prevent hair loss.
I notice that if I keep my hair longer I lose a lot more.
So do I.
I lost 75% of my ( then very thick) hair about 6 or 7 years ago...I was diagnosed with Lupus. But before the diagnosis I got very very sick, and because I stupidly let my body deteriorate so much my hair began to fall out.
Nothing helped it.
But to slow it down, I cut my hair short so it wasn't as heavy and it looked thicker, Then I proceeded to GET HEALTHY!! and it stopped.
Now, years later the hair dresser is commenting on how thick my hair is again. Thank God.
That said, I still lose heair everytime I wash it or brush it, but I think it's normal. Considering my hair used to come out in disgusting handfuls, this does not freak me out at all.
I have used a product in the past called "Shen-Min" (Biotech™ Corporation Shen Min® Hair Nutrient - BIOTECH - GNC) I purchased it at GNC and I really felt strongly that it worked. It works for your nails too. I felt like my nails were shooting out of my finger tips like silly string.
I did stop taking it because not only was the hair on my head growing but my hair was growing every place else. But I do highly recommend it.
