okay moms..I have a 23month old son who has been day-time potty trained for about 4 months now...yeah yeah..i know I have been procrastinating with the whole night-time half..but thats why im here..lol
So..how exactly did you guys (with children already potty trained, or actually going thru potty training now) handle this?? When did you stop the liquids before bed/naps. Did you put your child in underwear to bed/naps or did they wear the pull-ups? (my son wheres underwear during the day..and pull ups at naptime/bed time). Did you wake your child up thru out the night to take them to the potty???
ugh..imma first timer so ANYTHING would be helpful to me..i just want to get this potty training OVER WITH!!!! AHH!! lol
Hey MuscleMama,
I would say you are already ahead of the game, 23 months and a boy (heard boys are supposed to be harder)...I say kuddos to you!!! That being said, with my first I would cut out liquids prior to bedtime. I put panties on her for naps and bedtime...she did have a few accidents. Never ever woke her up...let sleeping babies sleep!!!
Now the second one...whole other story. She has been day trained for about 4 or 5 months, but still wears pullups to bed. She doesnt wake up when she has to go. I know at some point I am going to have to bite the bullet and just put panties on her and clean the messes, but not just yet.
I think they all tend to be a little different. My pediatrician says the average age for potty training is 3...so again kuddos to you!!!
thanks girl!!! I think I will start night-time potty training "offically" on next week..I see A LOT of clean ups in my future..lol..but i do need to stop the drinks before bed..he is so used to getting something to drink before bedtime..eek..lol
Boys are tough to night train. Honestly, my almost four-year old son isn't night trained yet. Boys' sphincter (sp?) muscles don't develop as quickly as girls and it is harder for them to hold it.
I would talk with your buddy about whether he is ready or not. My son wants to wear undies to bed so badly, but he pees probably two or three times a night. Ugh!
Some tricks if he is ready:
- Wake him up before you go to bed and take him to the toilet. He will probably be very groggy and not remember a thing.
- Stop liquids at least an hour before bed and make sure he goes right before.
- Layer his sheets at night like this:
Plastic bed pad, fitted sheet, plastic bed pad, fitted sheet, flat sheet. Have an extra blankie near his bed.
If he wets his bed, he can just get up, slip off his wet pj's, put on dry ones, pull off the top layer of wet sheets and go back to bed.
My daughter night trained so easily. I think pretty much at the same time. Boys just like to mark their territory heehee.

THIS IS AWESOME ADVISE!!! Thanks!! I would have never thought to layer it so many times..lol ..and thanks for that reassuring piece of info..I didnt know that it takes the boys longer to night train..I have been gettin a lot of lip from my mom about all this potty training stuff..the boy isnt even two yet..geesh..gimme a break! ..but THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK!! I will DEF. try everything you said
OK.
My first three (2 boys, 1 girl) were trained by 2.5 years. NOW, I do not believe in waking them up AT ALL. What if you are out or forget... FOR SURE an accident.
First off, 23 months is pretty young. I know I am not ready for it yet. But in any case...
SO, what I did was let them go commando with a t-shirt on for 2-3 days solid (over a weekend when we were home). Pump them with fluids and let them be near a potty seat or toilet. Practice, practice, practice!! For the night time... stop liqueds by 5:30 or 6:00 assuming they go to sleep by about 7:00. Encourage going to the bathroom before bath time and forsure have them go before bed. Part of the routine like brushing teeth. They should be able to get through the night but when they wake up they may have to go bad so you can not ignore the calling "mommy....I need to pee"-- that means NOW!!
Mine were all trained in 3 days flat --night and day. My daughter took a bit longer at night, not sure why, but absolutely NO accidents after the three days. They went back to school on the monday with a little baggie of incentive treats and that was it.
In my case though because I stopped the drinks early the boys were night trained (waking up dry) before the day.
My 2 year old is not officialy trained but has been going on the toilet for like 5 months now. I just have to be ready to make the switch nd I don't think I will even attempt til she is 2.5 years old.
Good luck!!!
My sons pretty much night trained themselves. I stopped liquids about three hours before bedtime, and then would just watch their night time diapers. After a few weeks of them waking up dry, I started putting them in underwear. They were also just a little bit older than your son, and were completely self sufficient with the potty (meaning they were using a regular toilet and could take their pants up and down by themselves). It may be worth it to observe his habits for a while before you try to night train him.
