One thing I'll point out is that although its great to shoot with lots of folks, I feel that all models/competitors need to protect their image. Think about yourself as a brand, with your physique being your primary "product". Just like corporations have lawyers and divisions dedicated to protecting their image and their brand — you should to.
As you start to compete more and more, you'll get approached by more and more photographers — some legit, some not-so-much. Keep in mind that with most photo agreements, the photographer has full rights to do whatever he wants with your photos once they are taken. If the photos are beautiful, then great, spread the word! Sell the brand! However, if you decide to shoot with someone who maybe isn't as skilled, keep in mind that these unflattering photos will be spread around just as much.
Have you ever seen a photo of a well known competitor and had to do a double-take at the photo.. not in a good way? Whoa.. really.. that's her?!
Yeah, well don't be that person. Protect your brand. Protect your image. Hold yourself in high regard and demand only the best. You've put way too much time and effort to establish this product of yours.
Great advice! Also, it is easier to find a photog that you love and work with him/her on projects rather than bouncing around from different photogs.
Also, one model place is awesome. You can only post five photos for free there. However, you may find a super cool photog who will pay for your membership like I did.
Always check them out and bring a chaperone if you are doing a TF* shoot. If it is a paid shoot, there will be plenty of people on board with you so you will feel comfortable. Ask the photog about hair, make-up, wardrobe, ect ahead of time so you are well prepared in advance.

If you can find a photographer that you click with who also wants to experiment with different looks and styles, then it's a match made in heaven. I had a muse for a little while and we worked together to push each other from a creative aspect. Some of my better photos came out of that time period (see below).
Don't pigeon-hole yourself as a physique model only (workout clothes, bikinis, etc).. instead, do your own "Fit Girl" take on any style of photograph you see. I like Weifried Watt's approach when it comes to this — typically the girls aren't wearing cliche outfits posing in a cliche way.
I was wondering when you can move on from TF* shoots and start asking for compensation? I find that scheduling TF* shoots all the time can become costly. I don't exactly have a plethora of 'model' clothing being that I came from teaching. Between clothing, accessories, hair, make-up, it adds up quickly.

Just like with anything involving money, it's all about supply and demand.
These days, there are alot more physique/fitness models out there than a decade ago (I've been doing this for 10+ years, so I know!), so the "supply" for photographers is pretty ample. Plus, with resources like MM, MySpace, Facebook, etc, etc, all these models are very accessible.
However, if you have a look that a photographer really wants to capture, perhaps for his own portfolio or for editorial reasons, you can receive payment. Or, if you work with a photographer that is sourcing content for a website (usually a members-type site), then they will sometimes compensate you in exchange for the money they will potentially be making off of your photos.
Just keep in mind what I said earlier — don't justify having unflattering photos of yourself taken by getting paid for them. Is $50 or $100 worth having bad photos of you being up on the internet for everyone to see?
That doesn't mean that all photos you'd receive payment for are bad — just make smart choices, not only for your wallet, but for your career as well.

Fitsights, do u ever come to Tx? i just saw sum pics of O on her facebook and awesome awesome job!

The past 2-3 years I've been laying low with shooting and the industry in general.. so I haven't really been on the road to shoot in awhile. Who knows though, maybe I'll catch that spark again and rent an RV and do a photoshoot tour of North America (since I know there's alot of Canadians on this board).

On another note... The last (and only) two shoots I have done were right before and right after contest. I am going to be 11 weeks out from my next contest when I shoot again. I have three shoots lined up in the next month, so I am not sure how to handle shooting in between shows. Granted, the photogs aren't looking for an iron physique, but I guess my ideal body in the photo is a little ego-driven. Thus how does one get ready for a shoot without compromising one's contest prep?
Hey guys..I have a photo shoot this weekend..and I know that we are shooting outside and in the gym. I am all for the "non-cliche" aspect of the shoots..but Im not sure where to start...
I have my yellow bikini, a black dress, and some black shorts that imma wear with my gymshoes. (I have a gray tanktop that imma wear..cuz my shoes are gray)...
another question..do I wear competition tanner for the photos????
There are definitely some photographers out there have a better chance of getting you in a magazine. People like Mike Yurkovic and Ralph DeHaan not only take great photos, but they also have a pipeline to these mags.
[B]If you want your photos published, you can either go two routes: shoot with a regularly published photographer and hope that he likes your look enough to send in, or two, take photos with whomever you want and send them into magazines yourself.[/B]
I'll be honest, the latter of those two choices is alot tougher, but you may get photos that you're happier with in the long run because you have more options.
It's your choice!
Do you think when sending in photos of yourself to magazines to start small??? I mean, I konw that Im not in shape enough for the big magazines (Oxygen, Flex, Muscle & Fitness..etc). Should I just send in my photos to everyone??..lol. I know exposure is a big thing. Maybe Im getting too far ahead of myself..goodness..I should probably wait until my 3rd photoshoot or something..until im "seasoned"..okay I'm rambling..lol..
