Is there something i can add to a whey protein shake that might be similar?

D-glucose and maltodextrin are first listed on the ingredients, does anyone know of a product that is simply one or the other?

Would glucose tablets have the same effect after a workout perhaps (diabetic supplement of sorts)?

I have tried that... Im definitely not a fan. Recovery time seems to go down the tubes compared to Surge.

I used to do a large rice cake with a serving or jam it worked well for me.

I'm sure some one somewhere uses those as postw/o supp it makes sense. Why don't you try it and see if it works, they aren't usually costly.

When I had carbs, I just had cereal PWO! I LOVE anything cereal related...so for me it was whole-wheat cheerios, oats, or cream of wheat. Mixed with protein powder in the milk...omg...heaven in a bowl!

So wait... what is the deal with your muscles needing carbs PWO if you are on the anabolic diet? What is a PWO meal on the AD?

The AD is very muscle/protein sparing, so there's no real need for PWO carbs...as long as you're getting protein and glutamine PWO, you're fine. I just have a regular whey shake, and then a solid meal 1-2 hours later.

Have you noticed if your recovery time is increased/decreased/changed at all from before you started?

AD is looking more and more appealing... especially since Im trying lower carbs (starchy carbs only around working out, everything else from veggies)

So could you just apply the same principal PWO even if you aren't on the AD?

From what I understand about nutrition, NO.

The AD replaces carbs with more protein and fat... if your body is used to using carbs as energy, it's going to reach for protein (from YOUR HARD EARNED MUSCLES!!) to replace your glycogen stores after your workouts. Which is why a carb is necessary in the average PWO shake.

Thanks V! I think I'll just start eating my carbs around my work out and add milk to the PWO shake. I started using just water, but I think I"ll go back.

When you eat carbs around workout times but are otherwise on a low carb this is known as a targeted ketogenic diet(TKD), the AD is a cyclic ketogenic diet (CKD) where you save the carbs to get every few days, e.g usually 5 low up to 2 high carb

If you need more information in my opinion Lyle Mcdonald is your man. Get the keto book from the library here and it explains everything really well

When I was carb cycling I used to buy brewers sugar (maltodextrin) from the supermarket and add that to my protein- super cheap and is a quick acting sugar

That was the name I was looking for. I remember reading it somewhere (probably one of your posts) but I couldnt remember what it was called.

Thanks!

Uh, this may sound stupid so I apologize...but if the purpose of the PWO shake is to introduce fast acting carbs into the system why couldn't you do a whey vanilla shake mixed with 8-16oz of OJ? I currently do Surge but am looking for something a bit less costly. Thoughts and opinions?!!

Fruit = fructose...which will actually restore liver glycogen.
Maybe if you had like...tang? Because it's actually sugar, not fructose...
