Another vote for the negatives! Another thing that really held me back was that I wasn't using control when coming down from the pull-ups and getting a full extension. i didn't realize I was cheating until a friend i train with pointed it out. maybe get someone to observe your form?

dropping bodyweight will obviously make it much easier.

You've all given great advice. I'm on a quest to build up to doing pull-ups. I've been using the assisted machine for years but it's not really helping. I've started doing eccentric chin-ups by jumping up and then slowly lowering myself. This in itself is a great lat workout - very sore for days! I can now do one chin up from a stand but not from a dead hang. Questions:
1) how often do you do pull-up/chin-up training (1x week, 2x week)??
2) what type of band or door bars are good for this? Thinking of buying one or the other but not sure what's a good brand.

I go under the squat rack, set the BB at the second-last noth and lie on the floor at a angle, face-up. I do 4 sets of as may wide-grip reverse pullups as I can. Once I warm up this way, I can usually get more reps of the reall pullups in. I struggle with them as well, but they are getting much easier as I lean out further....I also had my husband make me a pullup bar that hangs from the floor joists in the basement so i can practice daily. I haven't beat 3 sets of 15 yet :(
