My family is full of diabetics. For the most part, they are not morbidly obese. We just have a strong genetic tendency toward diabetes. For me it's a double whammy and comes from both sides of the genetic lines. Both of my parents are insulin dependent. I had gestational diabetes which is a good indicator that I am at high risk for developing this disease.

My dad told me something that his doctor told him about weight training. He said that during and after any heavy exertion the liver will pump glucose into the bloodstream which creates a huge insulin response. This is said to be terrible for diabetics, and that this population is more likely to store excess fat because of extreme exertion rather than to lose it like the rest of the population. This does NOT sound right to me. However, this doctor is a diabetes specialist, you would think he knows his stuff.

If anyone can shed light on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you could recommend some links or books that would allow me to study the body's physiological response to weight training, that would be awesome, too. Thanks in advance.

If anything lifting weights improves your bodies ability to use carbs, which means ur more insulin sensitive...I don't see how it could make diabetes worse

I know, it doesn't make any sense to me either.

I dont know much about diabetes, but I would 'assume' that eating properly and training would be the healthiest way to manage it. MOST doctors have no clue about a proper diet/training program which is why they jump to meds for everything...they are about the quick fix and unfortunately people would rather take meds than make lifestyle changes.
Ok...now, let me hop off my soap box

I'm on that same soapbox with you. I am disgusted by this pill or surgery for everything society. But this doctor was adamant that my father not train hard or over exert himself for any reason, and it has something to do with his diabetes. It's so strange. I would be able to write it off if the doc was like, "Training, schmaining, you just need drugs," but he wasn't.
