I am wondering if this is common or not. I do glute ham raises by putting my feet under a DB rack real tight, making sure they are locked in there. I tighten everything up but obviously really focus on tightening up the glutes and hams as I slowly descend, then push myself up (as little as possible), almost like a push up, and back to the top.
I have noticed, though, that my calves are SO TIGHT, almost cramped, after. Has anyone else experienced this? I assume it is because I am using every muscle in my lower body to lower down and up, and you can't really take the calves 100% out of it.

Well, problem is, I feel it working my glutes and hams big time! I just think that feeling it in your calves might be part of the deal when you don't have someone securely holding your feet. I think that all the muscles in the legs are working to keep those legs secured under whatever it is you are using, while if someone is securely holding you at ankles, you might not have to think about it as much.
Would love to hear what others think about this, too, though. Esp. those who have to do these on their own and don't have the luxury of someone spotting them.

I agree that if you don't have someone to hold your feet then all of your muscles will be engaged during the exercise...As long as you are still feeling it in your glutes/hams, just look at it as a little extra calf work

Hmmm...maybe I will just need to find myself a nice handsome man to hold down my feet
