This is a discussion on Lost my job within the You're Not Alone! forums,----- Wow....haven't felt so low in a long time...

My company was getting complaints that I was working for them at only 16 years old. So my boss had talks with his lawyers for a few weeks, and they said absolutely everything was FINE. However because people expressed concern, it wasn't really looking good to keep me on the team anymore.
It's funny, because I never thought my age would be the thing to make me lose my job. Now I'm basically fucked, with no money.
It's also funny how when everything seems to be working out awesome, some opportunities are just too good to be true. I'm an idiot for thinking it would last any longer than a few months.
My contest prep is looking very shaky right now.
Not only that, but since the issue had been brought up, I'm getting the most horrible comments from people you can imagine. It's like people thrive off of other people being miserable.

Ahh hunnybunny I am so sorry. I know how much it sucks to be laid off and I am finally over the low feeling but it takes awhile...kinda socks it to your self esteem.
Your age should have had nothing to do with anything!! As long as you were doing your job and doing it well then there should have been no problem. I am not sure how Canadian law works but here they could get in ALOT of trouble for letting you go based solely on your age. You are of legal age to work so that should be the end of it...I am sorry babe, I am so ticked off for you...that's discrimination completely and it's not right. If the lawyers said everything was on the up & up that should have been the end of it. You may have an angle, depending on how the Canadian laws work...but you could talk to your boss and request some sort of severance package, casually dropping (after some research) that being dropped only because of your age, which they new from the beginning could be viewed as discrimination. They may be willing to give you severance if they realize you understand employment laws and they think they could be in trouble for violating them. At least then that would give you some money to work with.
It'll get better babe, I promise. It's just hard to see right now.
It looks like the law applies to 18 and over unless you're living independently, but I'd still maybe give them a call and see what your rights are. Try to write down everything you remember being said from every conversation about this you had with your employer and put dates (and times if possible) to them.
I also agree with what Amberella said about severance - two weeks' pay is usually standard practice in the U.S. I asked my father about all of this - granted, his company is in the U.S. and he hires 18+, but he agreed that you should make some phone calls, and at the least put pressure on your employer to explain exactly what sort of complaints were received. He said the whole talking-with-their-lawyers bit sounded suspect, as well. Possibly they talked with them to see if they could legally fire you based on age...
As Tom Petty said:
Some days are diamonds,
Some days are rocks.
Some doors are open,
Some roads are blocked.
I'm so sorry Christine...I know how much you loved that job!
Its a shitty situation but, I can see how having someone under 18 represent a supplement company could pose a problem...Especially since most supplements state that they are not for use for people under 18.
Keep your head up...when one door closes, another always opens
I just need to find some solution, girls. I have no way of getting $$ until the summer. My last paycheck was spent on Olesya and the entrance fee Can't back out now, and I don't want to...I just gotta think of something...

Everything, basically. I bought myself enough food for the beginning 2 weeks, and that's it. So I don't have a suit, I'm out of BCAA's, and protein powder is running low as well.
This was a really, really inconvenient time to lose my job.

I havent used protein powder for over 2 months. You dont need protein powder... and I am sure you would be fine without the aminos for now!
If you can find a good deal on a suit... maybe it will all work out!

Protein powder is cheaper than buying meat, at least here anyway. Without the BCAA's I'd have nothing to take during my cardio, unless O gives me the go-ahead to do my cardio at a different time.
And I was probably going to go with Tammy's old suit, but even then, I still have no money for further food expenses. My parents aren't in any position to support me in this.
Is there any way for you to find a part time job?
Even if its just temporary...Maybe babysitting or something?
Yes, maybe you can advertise on Craigslist Toronto? I put up an ad for an editing service and have had a couple of bites so far...brings in a few extra $.
Keep your head up and focus on things you can control. BCAA will not make or break you, they are only a supplement and like you said you can borrow your friends suit. Can you put out an add for babysitting or something?
Here's my two cents...
1. Find someone on here who is your size and ask to borrow a suit. I borrowed one for my first comp. and it worked out just fine.
2. Ebay is a great way to make money if you've got stuff to sell. Like concert tees, trading cards, books, cds, dvds etc...
3. Start advertising yourself as a babysitter around school and around town. Local grocery stores are also good places to apply and they have flexible hours.
I also agree with everyone else that you should do some research and find out about severance pay and what your rights are as a 16 yr.old...
I'm so sorry Christine!! As hard it is just keep your head up girl!! Another door will open and it will be an even better door!! Things will work out just try to keep a positive attitude.
Def check out your rights. Make sure they are under the same laws your checking out, as an online company they may not be under the laws of employment for your county but whatever one they operate out of.
I know here in FL an employer can term you at any time for any reason but you can be employed at 14 if you have school permission. But I know your in CA and things might be different and I am sure if he was consulting an atty they would have told them not to term based on age if it was going to be a legal issue but it never hurts to check!!
Also if you have email communuication from them about terming you about age make sure you keep it! As mentioned try baby sitting, pet sitting, house sitting tutoring whatever you can. Good luck hon

Ohhh my girl..I'm so sorry. That totally sucks.
What a fucking dumb reason to let a hard working, intellegent person go.
I feel for ya my dear, and I'm sorry I didn't catch this sooner...I guess I've just been watching journals.
Have you been looking at other means of employment?
When one door closes another will open. Something will come along...good luck and chin up
You gotta understand, I live IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE until I move in June. This is the reason why this job was a total god-send for me.
Right now, I have no say in it. Nor do I want to cause a big deal over it. I talked with my ex-boss today, and he was saying how much the team is going to suffer without me there. I did a LOT for them, so they're very grateful, it just isn't good for business. Still hurts.
I just don't know how I'm going to afford anything. I'm really trying to think of things...he's sending me my final paycheck on the 25th, but after that I have nothing. Until I move in June, I'm basically fucked. I haven't even told my parents yet, because I hate to show people that I can't stick with things. Even if it wasn't my fault I got laid off, they were really proud of me, for once. I would hate to have them feel that they're burdened to pay for my expenses. I know they can't. I know well we can't afford it. So I don't want to tell them. The ONLY thing that has come good from this, is that I'll be able to focus more on my school, which really could use an extra nudge. But I need a job, badly.
