Im hoping someone can chime in here and give me some much needed advice... Have you ever taken prozac or are taking it now? What do you think?
I went to see my doctor yesterday and I discussed my whole PMS (PMDD) thing with him. Over the last 5 to 7 years its gotten so out of control. When Yaz was released it was approved by the FDA for the treatment of PMDD and I had been taking it for a while. I wasnt taking it so I wouldnt get pegnant (because I cant have kids) it was to regulate my period (which is whacky otherwise) and to help control the beast (PMDD).
Over the last few months it kind of stopped working. I wasnt getting my periods when I was supposed to and I was feeling all the horrible symtoms of PMS x10. So I was like WTF? Why am I taking this garbage which I dont need in my system anyway. So yesterday I discussed all this with him and he said "let me give you something else to help, try it out and let me know what you think"... Then he handed me a prescription for PROZAC... Hello... Prozac. I nearly started to cry cause I dont want to take PROZAC. So I took the Rx and left. Now Im faced with a decision. Do I take this crap or just deal with my PMS and all that it brings. My body will be free of all this garbage but I'll be miserable (and so will my family)...
I dont know wht to do about it. As of right now, Im not taking it... Do any of you have similar experiences or any advice??
I have a friend who had depression which started to spiral out of control. She was prescribed Prozac and it actually made it worse. I have another friend who says Prozac saved her life. I would definitely get a second opinion.
As the resident tree-hugging hippie chick, I am going to suggest you look into acupuncture and/of herbal remedies. Although my issues were very different than yours, acupuncture made a huge difference for me.
about the same thing happened to me the other day,
at my gyno appointment, i was telling her how moody i have been in the past year. ive switched around to numerous birth controls to try to find one that helps with my moodiness.. unfortunately, no such luck.. so, she gave me a prescription for prozac as well. i havent tried it.. i doubt i will.. ive been off bc for about 6 months, and think my moods have gotten a lil bit better, Im thinking of going back on the nuvaring and seeing how that goes.. my gyno also suggested therepy,,, She gave me the number to her therapist... i guess its worth a shot.. id rather try therapy before putting another prescription in my body..
So, im kind of in the same boat, mermaid.,. i wish you the best! its tough being a woman sometimes, hormones are crazy! Stick in there ! :-))
Thanks you guys for your input. Ive decided not to take it. I agree Ive got to find another route to take. There have been women since the begining of time who have dealt with PMS WITHOUT drugs... I can do it too.
My boys just will have to deal with me being a mega bitch
My poor husband... He's gonna lock me in a closet once a month...
About a year or so ago my PMT symptoms were so extremely bad my husband begged me to go the doctor, there he diagnosed me with estrogen dominance, basically my progesterone cycle was all up shit creek. My doctor prescribed Yaz but I refused to take it I am an al naturale kinda girl.So I started researching woman's hormone health and came across a guy called Dr Lee. I got his books and read them, well what an eye opener. I now take a natural progresterone cream during specific times in my cycle and it has literally changed my life.
I could not recommend Dr Lee enough for anything to do with hormone health.

Just my 5 cents worth
Thanks Broady, Im going to look into it. I really appreciate it.
I have a friend who also said prozac saved her life. The only downer is the sexual side effects. Hard to O! Sorry if TMI...
My gyno wanted me to take it when I told him about some of my problems. I still have the script. Never filled it. I felt like it's a hormonal imbalance, not that I needed prozac. He's all well I don't believe in any of that...Uh ok. Bu bye!
Ditto about Dr Lee. Good books! Progesterone cream is what I needed. Whoda thunk it? O ya me! Good luck!
I agree with everything that ws said. Prozac along with other anti depressants depanding on your current balence could work and could not work.
Sexual disfunction from not being able to naturally lubercate at all to losing your drive, to just basicdisfuntion of lack of orgasm.
Their can be a lack of feeling effect. Meaning you can lose all feeling not just the negative ones.
It can also increase negative feeling for the first 6 weeks while it's working into your system.
For my mom she stopped all her antidepressants because and I quote " I think it's better to feel angry and sad all the time instead of feeling absoltuly nothing".
There is usually a natural treatment for most aliments, I agree with getting a second opinion and I've never personally looked into this so I don't have a recommendation but sounds like Broadys gave an excellant one
Good luck with this!!

I had a similar situation about three years ago. Went to gyno, said my life was hard to handle. Told me to take Cymbalta during the school year. I was reluctant, but couldn't stand the stress any longer.
I took one pill two nights later. Let me tell you, I had the worst nightmares ever. I literally felt like I had lost my mind. Never again. The side effects are so bad. I know there are lots of people who truly need anti depressants and they do save lives, but I am not one of them.
Of course, my husband said that maybe the drugs made me feel normal, but since I am a crazy person that normal felt crazy to me LOL. Dork.
Check out those books that Broady suggested. Oh, and know that you are not alone. We are all in this crazy hormonal imbalance world together. XOXOXO

Karen - I still have the Rx in my bag too. I dont plan on filling it... I didnt plan on filling it the minute they gave it to me. I dont need more problems and issue on top of the ones I already have.

As soon as I got home from the Gyno I got onto the internet because I wanted to see what this prozac was all about. It seemed to me that the list of side effects were longer then the things it helped. Aside from everything else I noticed that it may mess with my sleep and I already had sleep troubles that pretty much confirmed that I wouldnt take the pills.
I think the other thing was as much as I hate to say it my mom is a hypocondriac (spelling?) and what ever the doctor says is law so she takes a slew of pills for everything and anything (most of which I swear are placebo). Me on the other hand Im the complete opposite, I hate doctors and hate all this medicine b/s. I hate the drug companies pushing all these drugs on TV and in magazines I mean really... I could go on and on. I dont even like taking tylenol if I dont really have to. I spend all this time and effort trying to be healthy and taking all these medications seem counter productive...
In the end I think I'd rather be a little crazy then full of un-necessary drugs.
I was on prozac once for about 6 months. I gained 40 pounds on it.
Looking back, I wish I had chosen a different doctor and choice of meds.
Not to say that clinical depression is not a real issue, but I am saying try something else. There are no real quick solutions to life's problems. And there are no "happy" pills.
